Transfusion medicine is a rapidly evolving area of veterinary medicine in the UK with blood products becoming more widely available to general practitioners and those in emergency practice. Appropriate use of both whole blood and blood products can save lives and improve the care of many critically ill patients. Understanding when and how to use blood and its products safely is an important part of a successful outcome. The course tutor has a wealth of experience both with the practicalities of performing transfusions and with the use of blood products in the management of emergency patients. Real life case examples will be used throughout the day to illustrate how transfusions can have a positive impact on patient outcome.
